The major site excavated in the early 1940s by Louis Malleret is Oc Eo, nowadays in Vietnam about 25 kilometres from the coast, but presumably on the seaboard at the time of its heyday as the major port of Funan, which may derive from the old Khmer word 'bnam', meaning mountain, giving rise to expectations that the capital may be found around Banam in present-day Prey Veng Province. Another significant site now being excavated by Cambodian and US archaeologists is that of Angkor Borei (Ancient Angkor) in present-day Takeo Province.
